I hate it when privileged white kids travel to poor and impoverished communities armed only with stories about Jesus Christ and then post pictures of said trip on Facebook.
Read a book. Howard Zinn's "A People's History Of The United States" would be a good start...
There are people in the world who have and have not. This dichotomy has everything to do with politics and economics and little to do with faith in god.
If these kids want to travel to another country and look at the brown people starving, fine. But don't act like you're doing any favors by praying for them.

what do you suggest they do instead?

I'll have to agree. Are they doing it from the goodness of their heart or for bragging rights? Or worse, to pad their college application?
Even Christ brought bread and fish. And, as far as I know, he didn't take any pictures either. :)
